Is Succession A Horror Show?

Right now I am reading, Roger Luckhurt’s Gothic. It is while reading this that it got me thinking about the TV show Succession and other shows that depict the wealthy to the extreme like White Lotus, Downton Abbey, Gilded Age, etc. There are many articles on the overrepresentation of wealth on television these days mostly from university publications like McGill and UCLA. Whether it is good or bad this overrepresentation of wealth I wonder if some of these shows can be classified as horror.

Most of the shows I have listed are strictly Drama with Succession and White Lotus sitting comfortably in the dramedy category.

Introduction to Horror in Succession

Right from the beginning episode of Succession, there is tension and an uncomfortableness to watching the Roy family. The first episode opens with a disoriented male voice in the dark not knowing where he is. After peeing on the floor a woman takes him away and says, “We moved into the new house, remember?” Immediately we know it’s dementia. A horror unto itself. Even the theme song and original score for Succession are filled with tension and drama. The song has an old classical taste too that builds up the gothic mood of the show. The theme intro credits show found footage mixed with modern HBO shots of Manhattan. The found footage is a home video of the wealth the Roy…
